The swallowable gastric balloon, often called the “smart capsule” or “pill balloon”, is a non-surgical weight-loss treatment. It needs no incisions, no endoscopy and no general anaesthesia, which makes it an attractive first step for people who want medical support to lose weight.
How does it work?
- You swallow a capsule attached to a thin catheter, under medical supervision.
- An X-ray confirms that the capsule is in the stomach.
- The balloon is filled with about 550 ml of fluid through the catheter, which is then removed.
- The balloon takes up space in the stomach, so you feel full sooner and eat smaller portions.
- After about 4 months, a valve opens naturally, the balloon empties and passes out of the body.
The whole placement takes about 15–20 minutes, and most people go home the same day.
Who is it suitable for?
- Adults with a BMI of roughly 27 or higher who have not reached their goal with diet and exercise alone.
- People who are not candidates for surgery, or who prefer a non-surgical option.
- It is not suitable for people with previous stomach surgery, certain stomach or bowel conditions, or during pregnancy. A doctor’s assessment is always required.
What results can I expect?
Results vary from person to person. On average, patients lose around 10–15% of their body weight during the treatment period. The best long-term results come from using these months to build new eating habits with dietitian support.
The first days
Nausea, cramping or vomiting are common in the first 2–3 days while the stomach adapts. These are usually managed with medication prescribed by your doctor. A gradual diet is followed in the first week.
Gastric balloon or gastric sleeve?
The balloon is temporary and non-surgical, suited to moderate weight loss. Gastric sleeve is a permanent operation intended for higher BMI and more significant weight loss. Your doctor will help you choose the right option.
