Buttock augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that adds volume and improves the shape of the buttocks for a more balanced, natural-looking figure. The two main techniques are fat transfer (often called the Brazilian Butt Lift, BBL) and buttock implants.
Main techniques
- Fat transfer (BBL): fat is removed by liposuction from areas such as the abdomen, waist or thighs, purified and injected into the buttocks. It reshapes two areas at once and uses your own tissue.
- Buttock implants: soft silicone implants are placed through a discreet incision. This option suits slim patients who do not have enough fat to transfer.
Who is a good candidate?
- Adults in good general health with realistic expectations.
- A stable weight, ideally close to your target weight.
- For BBL, enough donor fat in other areas of the body.
- Non-smokers, or patients willing to stop smoking before and after surgery.
The procedure
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes 2–4 hours. Most patients stay in hospital for one night.
Recovery
- Wear the compression garment as instructed, usually for 4–6 weeks.
- After BBL, avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for about 2–3 weeks; use a special cushion.
- Light walking is encouraged from the first day; return to office work in about 1–2 weeks.
- Final shape becomes visible after about 3–6 months, as swelling settles and fat stabilises.
Safety first
Like any surgery, buttock augmentation carries risks, including infection, fat absorption, asymmetry and, rarely, serious complications. Choosing an experienced plastic surgeon, a fully equipped hospital and following aftercare instructions closely are essential.
