Dental implant surgery is a routine procedure, but the first days afterwards are important for good healing. Follow this simple guide and always follow the specific instructions your dentist gives you.
The first 24 hours
- Bite gently on the gauze for 30–60 minutes to control bleeding.
- Apply a cold pack on the cheek (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) to reduce swelling.
- Do not rinse, spit forcefully or use a straw.
- Eat only soft, cool or lukewarm food once the anaesthesia has worn off.
- Take the prescribed medication on time.
Days 2 to 7
- Start gentle salt-water rinses after meals from the second day.
- Brush your other teeth normally and clean the implant area very gently.
- Keep to a soft diet: soups, yoghurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, pasta.
- Sleep with your head slightly raised for the first nights.
What to avoid
- Smoking and alcohol – they slow healing and increase the risk of implant failure.
- Hard, crunchy or very hot food on the implant side.
- Heavy exercise for the first 3 days.
- Touching the area with your tongue or fingers.
