After significant weight loss – whether through diet, exercise or bariatric surgery – the skin often cannot shrink back completely. Loose, hanging skin can be uncomfortable, cause skin irritation and hide the results of all your hard work. A body lift removes this excess skin and tightens the underlying tissues.
Which areas can be treated?
- Lower body lift: abdomen, waist, hips and buttocks in one circumferential procedure.
- Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty): for excess skin mainly on the abdomen.
- Arm lift (brachioplasty): for loose skin on the upper arms.
- Thigh lift: for sagging skin on the inner or outer thighs.
- Breast lift: to restore shape after volume loss.
Who is a good candidate?
- Your weight has been stable for at least 6–12 months.
- If you had bariatric surgery, usually at least 12–18 months have passed.
- You are in good general health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop.
- You have realistic expectations: scars are permanent, although they are placed as discreetly as possible.
The procedure
A body lift is performed under general anaesthesia. Depending on the areas treated, it takes 3–6 hours, and a hospital stay of 1–3 nights is common. Large cases are sometimes divided into two stages for safety.
Recovery
- Walk gently from the first day to support circulation.
- Wear the compression garment for about 6 weeks.
- Most patients return to light work in 2–3 weeks; avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise for about 6 weeks.
- Scars fade gradually over 12–18 months.
