Gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy) is one of the most widely performed weight-loss operations in the world. It helps people with obesity lose a significant amount of weight and often improves related health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea.
How does it work?
Using keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery, about 75–80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow, banana-shaped “sleeve”. You feel full after much smaller meals, and the level of the hunger hormone ghrelin decreases, so appetite is reduced.
Who is a candidate?
- Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or
- BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.
- In some cases, lower BMI with poorly controlled metabolic disease, after specialist assessment.
- Previous attempts at weight loss with diet and exercise, and readiness for lifelong lifestyle changes.
Before and during surgery
Pre-operative tests (blood tests, ultrasound, endoscopy if needed, and anaesthesia assessment) are done first. The operation takes about 1–2 hours under general anaesthesia, and the usual hospital stay is 2–3 nights.
Diet after surgery
- Weeks 1–2: clear and then full liquids.
- Weeks 3–4: puréed foods.
- Weeks 5–6: soft foods.
- After week 6: gradual return to normal, healthy food in small portions.
Protein should come first at every meal, and lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements are usually needed.
Expected results
Most patients lose a large part of their excess weight within 12–18 months. Long-term success depends on healthy eating, regular activity and follow-up with your medical team.
Risks
As with any major surgery, there are risks such as bleeding, leakage from the staple line, blood clots and reflux. These are minimised by careful patient selection, an experienced surgical team and close follow-up.
