What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) removes infected or inflamed pulp — the nerve and blood vessels inside the tooth — then cleans, disinfects and seals the root canals. It stops the pain, removes the infection and allows you to keep your natural tooth instead of extracting it.

The pulp can become infected through deep decay, a crack, trauma or repeated dental work. Typical signs are severe or lingering toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling of the gum or face, or a darkened tooth. Without treatment, the infection can spread and lead to an abscess and tooth loss.

At Biot Clinic in Istanbul, root canal treatment is carried out with modern rotary instruments and digital X-rays under local anaesthesia, so for most patients it feels no different from a normal filling. Afterwards the tooth is usually restored with a filling or a crown to protect it.

Frequently asked questions

Is root canal treatment painful?
With local anaesthesia, the procedure itself should feel similar to a normal filling. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is common and eases with simple painkillers.
How many visits are needed?
Many cases are completed in one visit; teeth with complex anatomy or severe infection may need two.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth and heavily damaged teeth usually need a crown to protect them from fracture. Front teeth can often be restored with a filling.
Is it better to extract the tooth?
Saving your natural tooth is generally the best option. An extracted tooth needs to be replaced with an implant or bridge to avoid shifting and bone loss.
Can root canal treatment be done during my trip to Istanbul?
Yes. It can be scheduled alongside other treatments such as veneers, crowns or implants within the same visit.
